Avoiding Disaster: What to Look for When Buying Engagement Rings Online

Shopping online is a great way to save time and gas, and every little package that arrives on your doorstep makes it feel like a special day. It’s one thing to buy a new outfit and some shoes, but it’s a whole nother ball game to buy something as pricey as an engagement ring online. There are many people out there who say they have an amazing deal, but if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is. Here are a few tips when shopping for engagement rings online.

Shop With Trustworthy, Reputable Companies

There are many pop-up companies selling high-end engagement rings with precious metals and gemstones on the web. When selecting a company to shop with, be sure they have a good reputation and have real, positive reviews from customers. Their website should have detailed descriptions and pictures of every product. They should also have extensive FAQs, a return policy, and information on shipping processes. You may also be able to find online reviews on Google for their company.

Every Diamond Should Be Certified

Just because a diamond is bigger, doesn’t mean it’s worth more. Diamonds are graded on the 4 C’s of diamonds — cut, color, clarity, and carat. The size of the diamond, or the carat, is actually the factor that means the least when determining its value. When diamonds are cut, they are then graded and receive a certification. But, not every certification is to be trusted. Be sure your diamond has a certification report from a reputable and highly respected certifying body like GIA or AGS. GIA has the highest standards and is the most widely used for diamond grading.

Read the Return Policy

You may think the ring you are buying is perfect for your loved one, but you may find out later that they don’t like the style, it doesn’t fit or wear just right, or there is some other issue where you want to return it. You want to be able to get your money back, and not just receive store credit, or not be able to return it at all. You’ll want to know how long the return policy gives you to return it, if they will cover the return shipping, and if they will resize your ring or charge you a fee to do so. If the website doesn’t have a return policy, steer clear!

Be Sure Shipping is Insured

Packages get lost in the mail all the time, so you want to make sure your ring will be delivered safely and reliably. Most engagement and wedding ring companies insure their shipping and cover the costs. Your package should require a signature or have the option to be sent to a mail carrier destination.

Get the Right Size

Never guess at a ring size when shopping for a loved one. If you want to keep the ring a surprise, take a measurement from a ring they already have and can wear comfortably on their ring finger. Ring sizes are measured in millimeters from the ring’s inner circumference. You can also use a string and a ring size chart that can easily be downloaded from the web.

Examine the 4 C’s of the Diamonds

As we mentioned earlier, the value of your diamond will be based on the grading of its 4 C’s. This will also affect the look of your diamond ring. When shopping for a white diamond, you want it to have a good colorless and clarity rating, so it’s not cloudy or off color in a brown or yellow hue. Sometimes, the color of a diamond can be influenced by light, like with fluorescent diamonds. Fluorescent diamonds usually glow a bright blue color when exposed to a black light. The certification will let you know if the diamond is fluorescent.

Next, you’ll want to look at the cut. How your diamond is cut will affect the dazzle and sparkle. When shopping for round cut diamonds, be sure the depth percentage is below 62.5% and the table percentage is below 60%. View videos of the diamond to make sure it has the sparkle you’re looking for.

Ask an Expert

If you’re in doubt, ask an expert for some advice on the ring you want to purchase. An expert will easily be able to pick out red flags, where you may have missed those points entirely. You can also reach out to customer service for more information on the ring you want to buy.

Buying an engagement ring is very exciting! And when you’re shopping online, your options are almost endless. We hope these tips will help you make your proposal a very special occasion.
